"Somewhere over the Rainbow"
There really is no place like home, and that's certainly true here at the Wilson as well. The Wizard of Oz brough many firsts to the Wilson stage:
A hole was cut in the extention in order to melt the witch. We used a small hydrolic motorcycle lift in order to "melt" her through the floor. The lid that was cut out was mounted to the top of the lift and it was slowly released as she threw her iconic lines whilst being immersed in fog. The lift then had to be hand pumped back up and secured in place in order to continue on with the show.
In order to acheive the illusion of flying monkeys, tornados, and even a magic bubble in which Glinda, the Good Witch of the North was lowered onto the stage, an aparatus used for aerial silks was setup and used the entire span of the stage, both vertically and horizonally. The actors had to step over it to exit and enter either side of the stage, but it certain gave a new sense of magic and a unique twist to the show.
